Piano Lessons in Portland, Dorset

Welcome to my new piano studio!

I have recently relocated to the beautiful isle of Portland in Dorset after 40 years living and working near and in London, where for the past 12 years I ran a successful and popular private piano teaching practice. Starting out as a novice teacher myself with a handful of beginners (children and adults), my studio grew rapidly into a busy practice of 25 students. Of those who opted to take graded piano exams, the majority achieved a Merit or Distinction. It was sad to say goodbye to my students when I left London, but I am looking forward to recommencing my teaching in a lovely new space in my house in Portland, with views to Chesil Beach and the bay of Weymouth.

My teaching style is relaxed and flexible, and I aim to tailor my teaching to each individual student’s strengths and needs to encourage them to play with confidence, musicality and expression. I want to give students the necessary tools to enable them to become confident independent learners who can open a book of music and feel able to tackle it on their own. I offer very specific support on how to practice intelligently, successfully and above all enjoyably so that students make noticeable progress – and gain pleasure from their playing.

A teacher who has a firm knowledge of the matter in hand and who combines this with charisma and fun to ensure that students of all ages gain confidence and pleasure – James Lisney, concert pianist

In addition to regular lessons, I also offer consultation lessons for those who would like their playing critiqued or who are preparing for an exam, or who simply want the experience of performing to someone else.

Learning to play the piano has many benefits: it can improve concentration, develop and strengthen memory, and improve mental and physical co-ordination. It also offers a deep sense of personal achievement, enjoyment and self-fulfilment.
